Total Shoulder Arthroplasty

Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, aka shoulder replacement, is an orthopedic procedure for patients with arthritis and certain fractures of their shoulder. Less common that the knee or hip replacement, the shoulder replacement surgery is just as capable of relieving shoulder pain due to arthritis. The following link contains a great amount of information detailing what a shoulder replacement is, who would benefit from one, and what to expect throughout the whole process. Dr. Lai performs both the anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement surgeries, in additional to the hemiarthroplasty shoulder surgeries.

Total Knee Arthroplasty

Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), aka knee replacement, is a very common orthopedic procedure. In patients with unremitting pain and inability to walk, a TKA will provide pain relief and a return of function. The following link contains a great amount of information detailing what a total knee replacement is, who would benefit from one, and what to expect throughout the whole process.

Are patients who undergo a total knee replacement able to return to running?

There is no surgeon consensus at this time regarding the recommendation of running after a total knee replacement. In a study of 4492 patients, 549 were preoperative runners. Of the 549 runners, 11.8% returned to running after their joint replacement. There was a slight increase in revision rate (6.2%) in the patients who resumed running when compared to a revision rate of 4.8% in patients who did not run after surgery.
